Krista Bracke
Speaker in Session 6
In 2009, Krista, a journalist of the Belgian National Radio, tumbled into a life with severe disabilities. She lost both her lower legs and part of her right hand due to a life threatening infection by the streptococcus pyogenes bacteria and a septic shock. In Mijn Leven op Stelten (2014) she described how she found a new balance in life, trying to raise two young boys. In 2019 she became an Honorary Doctor of Ghent University. Being a patient advocate, Krista shares her experiences on person centered care, on accessibility and inclusion, and on creating more awareness about sepsis. In September 2024 she coordinated the first European Summit of Sepsis Patients in Paris on which the Paris Declaration was launched, a strong demand for a European approach to sepsis. In October '24 she was co-author of an article in The Lancet focusing on this EU Call to Action.
