Thorsten , MHBA, studied human medicine at the Medical Faculties of Heidelberg and Mannheim at the Ruprecht-Karls-University of Heidelberg and earned his doctorate on the topic of 'Renal function in cardiac surgery patients.' Initially, he worked in the Department of Anesthesiology at the University Hospital Heidelberg, where he obtained his board certification in anesthesiology as well as additional qualifications in 'Emergency Medicine' and 'Specialized Intensive Care Medicine.' His research focuses on innate immune response and innovative pathogen diagnostics in sepsis, for which he was awarded the Venia legendi in anesthesiology by the Medical Faculty of Ruprecht-Karls-University Heidelberg. Shortly thereafter, he was granted the title of 'Extraordinary Professor' in anesthesiology at the same institution before being appointed to the W3 Professorship for 'Anesthesiology & Anesthesiological Intensive Care Medicine' at the University of Duisburg-Essen (UDE). This appointment is also linked to his role as Clinic Director of the Department of Anesthesiology & Intensive Care Medicine at University Hospital Essen, where he also serves as Deputy Medical Director. He is the author of more than 230 international peer-reviewed publications and has been recognized for his scientific achievements in innovative pathogen diagnostics with the “SIK Innovation Award” from the “Stuttgart Intensive Care Congress” and with the “Science Award” from the “Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft”.
