Shabir Mahdi

Shabir is a prominent South African vaccinologist and infectious disease expert, renowned for his pivotal contributions to global health. Currently, he is the Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of the Witwatersrand (South Africa). As a Professor of Vaccinology at the University of the Witwatersrand and Director of the South African Medical Research Council Vaccines and Infectious Diseases Analytics Research Unit, he has led groundbreaking research on vaccines including against pneumococcus, rotavirus, respiratory syncytial virus, and COVID-19. His work has significantly impacted public health policies, especially in low- and middle-income countries.
