Elena Moya

Panelist in Session 3

Elena is a survivor of meningococcal meningitis, contracted at the age of 4. She fully recovered without sequelae thanks to seeking medical help on time.

Since then, she is very concerned about this disease. For the rest of her life, Elena will work to tell other families about the disease, to get their children vaccinated, and to rush to the closest hospital as soon as they recognize the symptoms.

She is a philologist and has worked for more than 25 years as a Spanish and French Literature teacher. She studied for 2 masters as an Expert Manager in Patients Organisations and Schools’ General Executive Direction.

Since 2008, Elena has been a member of CoMO (Confederation of Meningitis Organisations) and has been working as the African and European coordinator for the past 13 years. Her task is to coordinate the activities and strategic plans of 21 patient organizations in 12 countries. She is also the Vice President of the AEM ( Asociación Española contra la Meningitis), a unique association that fights against this disease in Spain. Now she plays a critical role in building awareness of meningitis across Spain through her visits to schools, hospitals, ministers, and clinics. She has been trained to develop the best advocacy strategy in her country. She fights for equal access to immunization as the only way to be protected against bacteria or viruses.

Elena was chosen to be part of FEP (Foro Español de Pacientes) Board of Directors in 2018 as their International Coordinator and since then she has been actively participating in EPF ́ s activities. She has also been recently nominated to be a member of the Board of Directors of the Boston Scientific Foundation. Since 2020, she has been proud to be able to help choose the best projects that make a change in children’s health.

Her last outcome was contributing to the World Health Organization launching a roadmap to defeat meningitis in 2030. This historic decision and plan #defeatMeningitis recognizes the fight of millions of persons affected by this disease…
