Greet Van den Berghe

Greet Van den Berghe has studied at the faculty of Medicine of the KU Leuven – University of Leuven, Belgium and did her internships at the University of Bristol UK. She graduated in 1985 after which she specialized in Anesthesiology and later in Intensive Care Medicine. She subsequently studied biostatistics and completed a Ph.D. thesis in Endocrinology.
She is currently head of the Department & Laboratory of Intensive Care Medicine at the KU Leuven – University of Leuven, Belgium. This intensive care unit is a large (67 beds) tertiary center treating over 3100 patients per year, adults as well as children.
Greet Van den Berghe is also full Professor of Medicine at the KU Leuven, and has been running an active research program on the endocrinology of critical illness since 1995. She published more than 425 papers in peer-reviewed journals (H-index: 73), and has authored many chapters in international textbooks on intensive care and endocrinology. She has been an invited speaker at numerous scientific meetings worldwide. She has been a Clinical Research Investigator for the Fund for Scientific Research Flanders, Belgium, was a member of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine, is currently holder of a personal “advanced” grant from the Ideas Program of the EU FP7 and a Methusalem grant from the Flemish Government in Belgium, is a member of the German National Academy of Sciences - Leopoldina and a fellow of the Royal College of Physicians of Edinburgh.
